Instructions hidden in an email

Attack a toy email assistant running SmolLM2-135M-Instruct with lines hidden in emails, and test what prompt wording, allowlists, confirmation, and privilege separation catch.

Instructions hidden in an email

A toy email assistant on SmolLM2-135M-Instruct: some emails carry an attacker's line, and you choose the defenses.

Recorded from SmolLM2-135M-Instruct

Loading the model's recorded outputs for the four emails with every request, prompt, and separation setting.

About the download

Run the assistant on your own hidden line and see what reaches the app. This uses SmolLM2-135M-Instruct, the chat version of SmolLM2-135M from Hugging Face (2024): the same 135 million parameters, fine-tuned on about 460,000 example conversations and then preference-tuned, run from its original weights by this site's own engine.

The first time, your browser downloads about 272 MB of model files from Hugging Face. They are cached for later visits. Everything runs on your device; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Challenges

0 of 3 complete

  1. Mark the email as data in the prompt, and still see the hidden forward run. (not yet)
  2. Ask for the forward to Sam and get it done, while the forward hidden in Alex's report does not run. (not yet)
  3. Turn on all three app defenses and still get the attacker's words into the summary you read. (not yet)

Try this

  • With Report, hidden forward and no defenses, find the attacker’s line in what the model reads, then press Show hidden text.
  • Mark the email as data in the prompt and check whether the forward still runs. Then read the lunch summary with the same setting.
  • Ask for the forward to Sam with the allowlist on, then switch on privilege separation. Compare the table each time.
